Role of NGOs in Disaster Management

Role of NGOs in Disaster Management:
Bangladesh is a land of natural disaster. Whenever disasters strike, they do not discriminate or differentiate - they cause havoc and distress. They strike countries' rich and poor affect both men and women, old and young and cause destruction leaving behind a trail of devastation and irreparable losses. People here live, fighting against recurring natural disaster. There are many private organization with self interest to help or manage those disaster affected people. NGOS are one of the non-profit organizations to assist the affected people. There are many NGOS such as BRAC, CARE Bangladesh etc. NGOs have a great role in disaster management such as:
1. NGOS give relief and manage rehabilitation among affected people.

2. Are responsible to assist the government in implementing national programs successfully.


3. These organizations manage different programs to raise awareness about disaster among illiterate people.

4. Teaches the affected people how to prevent disaster and reduce risk.

5. A study showed that about 20% of the assistance to emergency response, recovery, and rehabilitation during 1970 cyclone disaster was ensured by NGOs both national and internationals and it was more than 40% in 1991 cyclone disasters.

6. At the time of SIDR CARE Bangladesh contributed much in 4 of the most affected upazilas in Bagerhat and Barguna districts by providing rehabilitation, relief.

7. Here BRAC contributed in 30 upazilas (sub-districts) of 9 cyclone-SIDR affected districts of Southern Bangladesh.
